A Wedding, A Earthquake, and A Hurricane

“Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” - Matt 24:42-44

As I was sitting in mass today I was struck by the appropriateness of this reading.

A map of the projected path of Hurricane Irene.
It has been an interesting week to say the least.  For starters my brother is getting married. If that was not enough two days ago there was an earthquake, and now it is predicted that hurricane Irene will be hitting the Jersey Shore this Sunday.  Guess where I live? On the Jersey Shore!

Sometimes it takes an earthquake, or a hurricane to remind us of our priorities.  Sometimes the Lord uses these events to draw us closer to him, to remind us of the fragility of life.  Like in today's reading no one knows for sure the day nor the hour when the Lord will come again.  The best we can do is to be on the lookout.  How can one do this?  By communicating daily with the Lord on an intimate basis, just like Jesus did when he taught his disciples, "The Our Father."  I am not talking about just uttering some prayers.  I am talking about having an heart to heart with the Lord.

Have you had your heart to heart with the Lord today? If not, then go ahead and do so.

The more you do this the less you will be afraid of what goes on in the world.
